St. Augustine Day 2

On day 2 of our Florida adventure, we visited the fort, the oldest school house, and many other attractions at our nation's oldest city: St. Augustine. the Spanish fort had never been captured by invaders, but it had been traded and re-traded several times. It had a moat and two drawbridges. The moat wasn't supposed to be filled with water, it was used as a place to keep the animals so the enemy couldn't get them. The oldest school house was quite large and had a garden and a separate building for the kitchen. next we hopped on a trolley and rode to the fountain of youth. When Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513 to the new world, Europeans were only living about 35 years with an average height of 5 feet. the Indians Ponce discovered were living until 80 and were about 7 feet tall. Ponce assumed that the Indians were drinking from the fountain. now there is a building over the fountain, a planetarium, a huge globe that shows the voyages of Ponce de Leon and Columbus.
After that, we went to a small resurant to eat lunch. next stop, the old jail. Lead by Deputy Clyde, us "Purserners" were showed the fancy, new, PINK jail house which also served as home for the sheriff and his familly. That was really cool. across from the jail was a small museaum that showed a brief history of the town. after that, we cruised around the city in the trolley. along the way we saw many hotels and musuems, including the first Ripley's museaum in america complete with a very close replica of Michealagleo's David out front. We finally jumped off and went to dinner at Amici, as it started to rain. After narrowly avoiding a wedding party, we had a great Italian meal served by "Stepheno" the very gracious waiter. Then we got another delicious treat at kilwins and crashed upstairs. Day 2 of the Wendt Florida adventure: success.
